Old Team v Young Team - 22nd October 2006
After nearly ten years since the famous night at the Kelvin Hall when the Young Team defeated the Old Team to end their run of 4 straight victories with a "fuzzy felt ball" the teams did battle again at the Goals complex in Shawlands. Two of the then Young Team had progressed (ahem) to the Old Team for this fixture.
The teams were as follows:
Old Team
Aldo Arena, Steven Mann, Stuart Mann, Martin Kennedy, Wayne McLean
Young Team
Matthew Harold, James Stevenson (Titch), Thomas Stevenson, Chris Rodgers, Ian Bergin, Davie Austin

After a tight opening 15 minutes where there was nothing netween the teams, partly due to 2 howlers from Aldo "the cat" Arena (i've since been told it was down to the wet surface!!!) the Old Team eventually stretched into a three goal lead. The Young Team then decided to play a more direct approach i.e. Matthew launching the ball to the edge of the Old Team box which paid dividends with the Young Team levelling the scores at 8-8 with 20 minutes to go. At this stage the match was in the balance and to be fair the Old Team were a wee bit worried at this stage (not that much though!).
The last twenty minutes saw the class of the Old Team shine through with Matthew picking the ball out of the net a further eleven times (the only times when he actually used his hands ;-)) with only one scored in reply. During this spell, man of the match Wayne McLean stepped up the pace and at the back Aldo made up for his early errors with some great stops in the Old Team goal. The Mann Sisters and Old Man Kennedy weren't too bad either!
The final score was OLD TEAM 19 YOUNG TEAM 9
The game was closer than the score suggests and it will be very interesting when the Young Team are bolstered by the return of some key players for the rematch at some point in the near future.
Scottish Cup Final 2005/06 - Provisional Arrangements
The following message is from Ross Meikle who has put in place provisional plans for what looks like being a great pre cup final party to start off what will hopefully be a day to remember.
Cup Final Breakfast Party: I have asked for (and am hopeful of getting) an early licence for about 10am. Bus will pick up at Clydeside and bring to club (EK is only short bus/taxi) about 9/9 30. There will be a few horse races (to pay for the free bus to Edinburgh later!!) as well as 2 journalist speakers. Euan Murray (Guardian) has confirmed and Bill Leckie (Sun) has said he "would be delighted to do it" but will confirm with his boss first. I have invited a Gretna Supporters Club (still to confirm) and will make up the numbers with Jambos (Bathgate or Rainbow). Numbers limited to about 120/130 so depends how many of our guys want to come. Breakfast food will be provided so will probably charge a nominal fee to cover food and cost of race hire and will print tickets to be bought and paid for in advance (like our Dances). Hope this is enough info to start with. Don't be too definite about ANY details just yet. Ross.
As this message states, none of these plans are definite at the moment, but it would be good if people could e-mail me their thoughts on these plans and whether they would be interested in attending. People can also post their views on the website messageboard and the Glasgow Hearts forum on Kickback.
Hearts Supporters 5 a Side Tournament
Glasgow Hearts sent a team consisting of Steven Mann, Stuart Mann, Brett Buchanan, David Seawright, Martin Kennedy & Aldo Arena to the Hearts Supporters 5 a Side tournament held at the Pitz in Edinburgh.
The first game was against a side called Tynecastle FP which included Hearts legend, Gary Mackay. In a game of many twists, Glasgow Hearts led 3-2 going into the last 2 minutes, but managed to lose the game 4-3 from virtually the last kick of the ball, Mackay scoring the equaliser. This defeat to the eventual winners of the tournament proved to be very costly. Glasgow Hearts won the next 2 games 4-2 and 4-0. The 4-0 win was over Livingston Hearts and was our best performance of the tournament. We then went into the final game of the section requiring a win to go through the semi's, but found it hard going in our attempts to break down the Fulchester Hearts defence. Glasgow Hearts then suffered a minute of defensive madness and we were 2-0 down and despite a consolation we went out of the tournament after a 2-1 defeat.
Our defeat in the first game proved to be decisive, which was disappointing because we had the lead and should have won it. It was the hardest game that Gary Mackay's unbeaten team were given on the day and the only consolation was that we got to play against the great man, who showed, he still has plenty of quality. Oh well, there's always next year.
